Indonesia’s Agenda on Climate Change Unmoved by US Backing Down from Paris Agreement

Jakarta (Greeners) – Ministry of Environment and Forestry underlined that Indonesia’s commitment to achieve climate change agenda will not be moved despite of US decision to back down from Paris Agreement recently, said Minister Siti Nurbaya, in Jakarta, on Saturday (3/6).

Minister Siti said that Indonesia’s agenda on tackling climate change was based on its Constitution and not ordered by international world, especially US.

The decision, she added, would not changed the government’s commitment to uphold its Constitution.

“Indonesian government had ratified the agreement under the law issued in 2016 aiming to reduce earth temperature caused by carbon emission gas to two degrees Celsius,” she said.

Under the 2016 law, national aim as stipulated at the 1945 Preamble to protect the nation and to increase people’s welfare, educate people and promote world order based on independent, peace, and social justice.

“So, Indonesia will continue to execute the Constitution and the law, not because of other nations, including US,” she said.

Furthermore, she said that Indonesia will keep on applying Paris Agreement referring to three justifications. The first one refers to the 1945 Constitution that stated “Each persons have the right for welfare, home, and good and healthy environment and health service”.

Second, considering Indonesia ecosystem is an archipelago state prone to earth temperature rising and third, Paris Agreement is considered as a sufficient and systematic instrument comprise of methodology to support Indonesian government to create better environment.

“We want to reduce it to 2 or 1.5 degrees of Celsius. Currently, we’re at 3.5 degrees Celsius so it will be dangerous if not handle with care,” she said.
